Course Description:

Implicit bias can manifest within the therapeutic space in a multitude of ways. One of the ways implicit bias can influence behavior is in the form of microaggressions: the sometimes unintentional or intentional, verbal or nonverbal comments that demean or behaviors that exclude. It is imperative that therapists have an understanding of what microaggressions are and how they can be addressed. Reparative steps will be explored through multiple roles within microaggression situations: as actor, where the therapist commits a microaggression; as target, where the therapist is receiving a microaggression or supporting a client who received a microaggression; and finally, as observer, where the therapist is witnessing a microaggression, either in group or amongst colleagues. By building our awareness and skills for response, clinicians can be better prepared to navigate with humility and advocacy.

Course Learning Outcome Objectives:

Participants will be able to define Implicit bias and ways it can impact the therapeutic space.
Participants will formulate an understanding of microaggressions and potential impacts upon the therapeutic relationship if not addressed.
Participants will be able to apply 2 microintervention strategies to address microaggressions and engage in reparative work.

Hope Heffner-Solimeo, MA, ATR-BC, LPC is a Registered Board-Certified Art Therapist and Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of PA who has worked in the field of Art Therapy for over 13 years. Hope attained her bachelor’s from Bucknell University and master’s from Drexel University, where she is now Adjunct Faculty and member of the Board of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the College of Nursing and Health Professions. Hope holds clinical expertise working with adolescents and medically complex children from her frontline work at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for over 8.5 years. More recently, Hope combined her passion for research at the intersection of social justice, healthcare, and andragogy when she accepted a position as a Manager within the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at CHOP. In this role, she develops and facilitates trainings, programs, and initiatives for clinical teams across the enterprise to embed increased self-awareness and deeper understanding of implicit bias, intersectionality, privilege, microaggressions, allyship and cultural humility.
