Course Description:
Diagnostic overshadowing is a powerful manifestation of how unexamined implicit biases hold the capacity to influence our clinical assessment and practice, and ultimately lead to harm. Exploring this implicit bias in a meaningful way requires individuals to understand the concepts of intersectionality and the power dynamics inherent in the patient/client-therapist/counselor relationship. However, an exploration is not enough, as clinicians, we must point out implicit bias when we see it, take actions to fight against implicit bias, and be able to analyze how implicit bias took place and how to mitigate it. Clinicians must build a muscle of comfort for disrupting the narratives that perpetuate implicit biases. Attendees will enhance their clinical practice through the examinations of two strategies to disrupt implicit bias among their colleagues. These strategies will provide both insight into personal barriers to advocacy and specific language toward unveiling harmful narratives
Course Learning Outcome Objectives:
Participants will be able to articulate the definition of implicit bias and more specifically, explore the bias of Diagnostic Overshadowing and how it can impact clinical assessment and judgment in the therapeutic space
Participants will be able to identify ways implicit bias causes health disparities in the clinical setting.
Participants will be able to list 2 strategies to identify and mitigate against implicit bias within themselves and their clinical practice
Participants will analyze two clinical case scenarios to build a muscle of comfort in addressing and disrupting implicit bias in the professional setting with colleagues
