Illinois Psychologist Cultural Competency 1 CE Training FAQ

Cultural Competency training is one of the mandated continuing education (CE) topics required for Illinois Licensed Clinical Psychologists (LCP) and Prescribing Psychologists (RxP). It is required once every 6 years.

Based on Illinois Administrative Code
68 Ill. Admin. Code Section 1130. 525, an 1-Hour Cultural Competency Training Course is:

Required for All Healthcare Workers

All health care professionals holding one of 29 listed licenses, including clinical psychologist, must complete a 1-hour cultural competency training course.

Defined by Attitudes, Knowledge, and Skills

Cultural competency training is defined as the development of a set of integrated attitudes, knowledge, and skills that enables a health care professional or organization to care effectively for patients from diverse cultures, groups, and communities.

Required Once Every Six Years, Not Every Cycle

Cultural Competency training is require once every six years, beginning with the first applicable license renewal on or after January 1, 2025. A licensee who elects to repeat the course more often may count it toward CE, but only one credit hour may be applied as part of the 24 required credit in any single renewal period.

Ok to Take One For All of Your IL Licenses

A licensee holding multiple covered licenses may apply one completed course toward the requirement for all of them, without retaking the course separately for each license.

Does Illinois require Cultural Competency training for psychologists?

Yes. Illinois Licensed Clinical Psychologists must complete 1 hour of Cultural Competency training. This requirement is established under this Illinois code and this code, and applies beginning with the first applicable license renewal on or after January 1, 2025.
