Course Description:

Exploring and unpacking the ways implicit bias impacts us as mental health professionals, the relationships we foster with clients and the systems in which we function is a critical piece to providing inclusive and equitable care. This ubiquitous cognitive phenomenon shapes our worldviews, perceptions, and interactions we have with both individual and systemic level impacts. Attendees will enhance their clinical practice through the exploration of three strategies: 1 individually focused and 2 which can be applied to both our own development of self-awareness and awareness of systemic biases. These strategies provide meaningful ways clinicians can work towards culturally responsive care with diverse populations.

Course Learning Outcome Objectives:

  1. Participants will learn the definition of Implicit bias and ways it manifests within our human experience.

  2. Participants will formulate an understanding of how Implicit bias has both individual and systemic impacts within themselves and the systems they work as mental health professionals.

  3. Participants will learn 3 strategies to identify and address Implicit bias within themselves and their clinical practice which promote culturally responsive care.
