Course Description:

This workshop will cover 3 applications of using puppets in art therapy with older adults in age-affirming ways to promote brain health, whether a person has dementia or not. You will learn two puppet-building techniques, simple shadow puppets and playful mouth puppets, as well as practical tips for engaging clients in puppet play and performance. We will discuss the neurological benefits of puppet building and play as well as the ethical considerations of utilizing puppetry as a modality with older adults.

Course Learning Outcome Objectives:

1.  Participants will be able to name at least 3 ways that creative engagement supports brain health.

2.  Participants will be able to identify at least 2 unique properties of puppet play that promote communication

3.  Participants will be able to describe at least 3 of puppetry applications for art therapists working with older adults

4.  Participants will be able to differentiate the ethical considerations of engaging with older adults in ways that promote dignity rather than infantilize

5.  Participants will be able to explain the ethical significance of reducing dementia-related stigma in art therapy

Theresa Dewey, ATR-BC, LCPC

Theresa Dewey is a licensed clinical professional counselor (LCPC) and board-certified art therapist (ATR-BC) with over 19 years’ experience in dementia care, intellectual disability care, and end-of-life care. She has worked in various settings, including roles at residential facilities, art therapy studios, a behavioral neurology clinic, and the Alzheimer’s Association. Currently, she provides dementia education and consultation through Dewey Dementia Consulting. She has been a faculty lecturer at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, including teaching courses on ethics in the graduate art therapy department. She received a Master of Arts in Art Therapy at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BA in Anthropology/Sociology from Rhodes College. 

How to Get Your CE Certificate After Completing The Course:

Please fill out a course evaluation and pass the post-test exam by 80% score or more. Your certificate will be issued to you after passing the exam. You can retake the exam if you do not pass.
