Course Description:
Understanding Social Class is required by all mental Health professionals, embedded in all the codes of ethics for multicultural competency(ATCB, NSW, APA, ACA). However, due to the lack of definition on social class and classism, as well as the American culture's resistance to social class concepts, counselors and therapists may not receive the specific training on social class and classism in their course of education. The lack of awareness on classism, much like color-blindness, may perpetuate harm and make therapeutic relationships ineffective. In this brief overview of social class and classism, participants will learn the effects of social class and classism in the macro environment and in micro therapeutic encounters. Research, case studies, and clinical implications of social class and classism will be reviewed. Specific actionable steps for mental health professionals relevant to culture competency pertinent to classism awareness is the main goal of this presentation.
Course Learning Outcome Objectives:
1. Participants will be able to identify at least 3 aspects of social class and classism in larger environmental, macro and micro, as well as clinical situations.
2. Participants will name at least 3 examples of internalized classism pertinent to Perception, Experiences, and Acts of classism and their impacts.
3. Participants will be able to differentiate at least 3 specific aspects of social class behaviors in clinical settings and the appropriate therapeutic actions to facilitate in treatment.
