Suicide risk assessment is one of the most consequential clinical skills a mental health professional carries. And it is also one of the areas where continuing education tends to be either too theoretical to apply or too procedural to think with. I wanted something different when building this course.
This summer, Spring Advisory is offering a 2-CE live virtual training: Suicide Risk Assessment: Evidence-Based Applicable Skills for Clinical Practice, taught by Denise Wolf, MA, ATR-BC, ATCS, LPC, LPAT — Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Creative Arts Therapies at Drexel University.
Denise brings over a decade of professional training experience in suicide assessment, crisis intervention, and trauma-informed care. Her teaching methodology is applied and interactive, grounded in contemporary research and real clinical scenarios. She has delivered trainings for organizations including Philadelphia Community Behavioral Health, Sources for Human Services, and Onward Behavioral Health. I trust her approach because it does not simplify in order to make clinicians feel more comfortable. It builds actual competency.
What the course covers:
The workshop addresses risk and protective factors — including structural inequities, social determinants of health, and individual-level variables — and teaches clinicians how to conduct a direct, clear suicide inquiry covering ideation, intent, plan, behaviors, and access to lethal means. Participants will practice differentiating between low, moderate, and high risk levels and constructing management plans that are both clinically rigorous and responsive to each client's specific cultural context.
The course also critically examines AI's emerging role in suicide assessment and documentation — not to endorse it, but to equip clinicians to evaluate its limitations and ethical implications in their own practice.

Mandatory Suicide Assessment Prevention CE for Licensed Mental Health Professionals, Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, Counselors, and therapists

States where 2 hours satisfies or partially satisfies the requirement:
Tennessee — licensed social workers must complete 2 hours in suicide prevention every four years. A 2-CE course meets this in full. Mswdegrees
Oregon — licensees are required to complete 40 hours of CE every two years, including two hours of suicide risk assessment, treatment, and management. A 2-CE course meets this in full. Oregon
Pennsylvania — Act 74 of 2016 requires licensees of the State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists and Professional Counselors to complete 1 hour of CE in the assessment, treatment and management of suicide risks per renewal cycle. A 2-CE course exceeds this requirement. Upmc
States requiring more than 2 hours (course partially counts):
Washington — mental health counselors, MFTs, and social workers must complete 6 hours of suicide assessment, treatment, and management training per renewal cycle. Washington State Department of Health
Nevada — licensed counselors and therapists are required to complete 4 hours in suicide prevention per renewal cycle (for those licensed before January 1, 2025). NetCE
California — requires suicide assessment training as part of CE for psychologists, social workers, and MFTs; hours vary by license type and whether graduate study began before or after 2016.
